Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. This dorei is in the shape of a houshu no tama, a pear-like emblem with small flames, a common symbolic feature in inari shrines across Japan. This item is carried by fox spirits and said to grant wishes. It is painted yellow, red, green, and blue with gold glitter on the flame section. There is a small brown clay ball inside as well as a red and white string tied at the top.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
