Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei 

This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in the shape of a Hina doll. The character featured is the prince/emperor holding a painted gold fan. Usually these come in a pair, the other half of the set being a princess/empress. It has a small white clay ball inside and a red string tied at the top. Hina Matsuri is an annual festival on the 3rd of March each year that celebrates girls with elaborate displays of dolls representing royal courts of old times.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
