Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. It is in the shape of a hime daruma, a type of alternative style daruma that features a young girl, usually with a kimono and a sweet face. This particular one is mostly white with black eyes and a momiji maple leaf-shaped sticker with peony flowers on it is adhered to the front. There is a red string attached to the top, and there is a white clay ball inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
