Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in the shape of an Ainu man’s head. It is painted black and is crafted with fine details. It has a small brown ball inside and a faded purple string attached to the top via a metal loop. Ainu are an indigenous people that make their home in northern Japan in Hokkaido and the northern islands.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
