Vintage Japanese Handcarved Tsuge Hair Comb w/ Case

This is a vintage Japanese hair comb called tsuge or tsugegushi. It is carved traditionally of boxwood (but not exclusively) and is used for combing, but also cleansing one’s hair. The comb is meant to increase circulation in the scalp, reduce frizz, and distribute natural oils evenly. It is often suggested to season the comb with your oil of choice. It comes in a beautiful case made of chirimen silk and is purple with a  traditional kanoko pattern (which resembles the spotted pattern on a fawn) on the outside and a simple plain silk on the inside.
