Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Wooden drum, Mokugyo

This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar fitting, Mokugyo (a fish-shaped wooden drum). Mokugyo is intended to keep the rhythm of sutra chanting by beating and sounding. It also helps to awaken people in sutra chanting. It is used in the Zen sect, Tendai sect, and Jodo sect. It can be used at home in front of a butsudan as well.
This set comes with the drum itself, a beautifully carved and hollowed piece of wood, a pillow decorated with silk fabric and a tassel, and a large striker with animal skin suede on the head.

• Good condition considering age. Wear on suede head of drum stick. Pillow fabric is faded in many places. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
