Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside and the top border are white with a subtle dragon and cloud pattern, while the front side is an olive green with gold embroidered peonies (botan) and chrysanthemums (kiku).
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
