Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth

This is a rectangular vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside and the top border are white with a subtle dragon and cloud pattern. The front side is bright orange with embroidered gold chrysanthemums with a red floral grid border. This rectangular type is often used as a background for a standard triangular uchishiki.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
