Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside and the top border are white with a large peony pattern, while the front side is white with large blooming chrysanthemums (kiku) embroidered in brilliant gold with red accents.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
