Vtg. Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Orin Bell Fabric Pillow

This is a vintage Japanese large orin bell pillow or cushion for Buddhist altars. It has a unique flower shape and is made to hold a singing bowl without a stand. It is crafted from purple silk fabric with a gold chrysanthemum and paulownia flower pattern. This cushion has a decorative gold-colored tassel at the very center.
Singing bowls are sounded during ritual prayer. The sound of an Orin bell can reach the Buddha in the Pure Land. Sound is also used to ward off people’s evil spirits and convey prayers to the Buddha, ancestors, and the deceased. The pillows help stabilize the bowl and balance the sound, and are a personal design choice for the user.
