Vtg. Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Orin Bell Fabric Pillow

This is a vintage Japanese orin bell pillow or cushion for Buddhist altars. It is made of a combination of purple and red with gold silk fabrics featuring a traditional chrysanthemum (kiku) and karakusa vines motif. It is in a classic round shape with a simple teal tassel on one side.

Singing bowls are sounded during ritual prayer. Orin bell sound can reach the Buddha in the Pure Land. It is also used to ward off people’s evil spirits and convey prayers to the Buddha, ancestors, and the deceased through sound. The pillows help stabilize the bowl, balance the sound, as well as act as a personal design choice for the user.
