Vtg. Japanese Porcelain Incense Burner, Koro
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist porcelain incense burner (koro) commonly used in Buddhist altars. It is used for burning incense powder or sticks. Burning incense is a means of purifying the body of the worshiper.
It is short, round, and made of fine Kutani porcelain. This koro features a sometsuke (blue and white) design of a dragon and has a Chinese-style top border. The lid has a shachihoko finial. Shachi are folk creatures with the head of a dragon and the body of a carp. This image is commonly seen in the form of statues at the tops of old buildings and are thought to be protectors against fire. Shachi are particularly famous in Nagoya.
