Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth

This is a small vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside is white with a large peony pattern, while the front side is white with a pair of birds (likely Ho-oh) embroidered in gold, red and green.

Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.

• Fair condition considering its age. Fold marks. Discoloration and stains (red thread had bled onto back side). Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
