Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth

This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside and the top border are white with a subtle folding fan pattern, while the front side is a vivid red color with a gold embroidered floral crest.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.

• Okay condition considering its age. Red dye has bled onto white sections front and back. General discoloration of white silk. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
