Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth

This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside is white with a floral and folding fan pattern, while the front side is a coppery orange with gold, white, blue and purple that features cherry blossoms and leaves.

Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.

• Good condition considering its age. Fold marks on the top corners. Discoloration of white sections. Fading. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos carefully.
