Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Drawer
This item comes from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This shallow, short drawer is mostly coated in classic black lacquer. The front contains intricate bronze metal border embellishments along with a gold inside border and hand-painted makie design of carnations (nadeshiko), irises (ayame/hanashoubu) and a dragonfly.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a “small temple in the home”.
