Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Drawer
This item comes from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This small, short drawer is mostly coated in classic black and gold lacquer. The front contains intricate brass metal border embellishments along with a gold inside border and a hand-painted makie design of a peony flower (botan) with leaves and buds.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a “small temple in the home”.
