Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese boxed hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features the top of Mount Fuji painted in red and black. It is called Akafuji, literally ‘red Fuji’. In the foreground, there is the sea with waves. This piece is signed with a name. The box has inscriptions on the outside and the inside of the lid.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
