Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features two cranes standing next to an old pine tree. There are two turtles in the foreground and a rising red sun in the background. This piece, designed by artist Keika Nakajima, is signed with a name and a red seal, and it has a label on the outside. The box has inscriptions on the outside and the inside of the lid.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
