Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese boxed hanging scroll (called kakejiku or makimono) features a winter landscape scenery in the mountains. A man with traditional winter clothing (a large straw hat) is walking under the falling snow towards houses, from where some smoke is coming out of a chimney. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, literally mountains and water. It is painted in black and white with some dashes of brown. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. The box has inscriptions on the outside of the lid.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
