Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese boxed hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) represents a man hanging from a vine over a cliff where stands a fierce tiger. The vine, attached to a pine tree, is being eaten by two mice. The man is hanging above the sea where a dragon is swimming. This scroll is possibly inspired by a Zen story (or koan) called The Tiger and the Strawberry. The scroll is signed with a name and a red seal. The lid of the matching wooden box has inscriptions on the outside and the inside.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
