Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese boxed hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) is titled ‘A Hundred Cranes’ and features a hundred cranes flying above a mountain landscape. Some cranes are resting on standing pine trees in the foreground. The mountains in the background resemble those in China, and some buildings on top of the mountains are also painted. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. The box has inscriptions on the outside and the inside of the lid.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
