Japanese Boxed Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) is blank (no picture) and has thread holders. It can hold a shikishi-sized picture. This kakejiku has a brown background with some geometric designs. It is stored in a paper box which says Shikishi Kake meaning a hanging scroll for Shikishi.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
