Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This item is a Japanese shikishi art board. It is a printed reproduction of an artwork depicting samurai on horseback practicing archery, or yabusame. The colors are vivid, particularly the armors in red, black, and white. There are also two field men walking close to the horses.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.

• Good condition considering age. Stain on the right, close to the horse’s tail. Some of the gold foil on the edges is missing. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos.
