Vtg Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting Nihonga

This is a vintage hand-painted shikishi art board of two branches. One branch is bearing pink five petals flowers while the other is thicker and does not have flowers or leaves. The flowers on this art board are likely Japanese plum flowers which are a symbol of Spring. It is a classic display piece  of a natural scenery that can find a place in any home or office decor.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
