Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This is a vintage Japanese shikishi art board. It is hand-painted and features a landscape scenery with a big blue mountain on the background. Some trees with pink blossoms, most likely cherry blossoms or plum blossoms, can be seen in front of the mountain. Some people are painted as well. The shikishi art board is signed.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.

• Good condition considering age. Discoloration. Gold foil on sides is damaged. Bent corners. One corner is damaged (paper is peeling). Some stains on the back. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos.
