Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board

This item is a vintage hand-painted shikishi art board showing a calligraphed poem. The poem is painted on a paper that has different colors such as yellow, green and purple. On the back of the art board, there are some inscriptions corresponding to the date of the creation and the age of the author. It is a simple and modern display piece that can find a place in any home or office decor.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
