Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Scroll

This is a Japanese paper hanging scroll (Gohonzon). The image at the center is a reproduction of calligraphed inscriptions, possibly a sutra or other sacred texts. This scroll is an icon displayed in Japanese Buddhist home altars, Butsudan. It is a powerful religious image, aimed to be at the center of an altar. It is dark blue and red with gold embellishments. It is embellished with metal parts on the top corners and on the bottom.
