Antique Japanese Wooden Masu Bucket

This traditional Japanese rice bucket, Masu or Ittomasu, was once used for measuring and storing units of rice (about 18L). Sturdy hardwood with iron holding it together, this bucket has two handles typically found on most masu. It comes with a heavy solid wood pestle that can be used for pounding cooked rice into mochi. This masu has carvings on the front.

• We acquired this item from an antique auction in Tajimi, Gifu in Japan.
