Antique Japanese Throat/Laryngeal Speculum

This is an antique Japanese brass throat/laryngeal speculum used during ENT (ears, nose, throat) exams or during surgery. It is made of loops of metal, completely open on all sides. The tip also dives down with the contour of the mouth and throat. There are no springs or bolts, which makes this instrument completely manual. 
Brass medical tools were popular in the 1800s and very early 1900s due to their ease of being sterilized with alcohol or boiling water (before autoclaves), but fell out of favor with the introduction of stainless steel.
