Vtg Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Ceiling Part
This item is a large decorative part from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This piece acts as the interior ceiling of a home altar. It is coated with black lacquer and brushed with gold lacquer to help reflect light and illuminate the altar.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
Acquired in an estate sale in Gifu, Japan
