Vintage Japanese Kashigata, Cake and Candy Mold

Japanese kashigata are hand-carved wooden molds used to make higashi since the Edo period. Higashi is a broad category of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) and is a low-moisture treat made with soybean flour or rice flour, fine sugar, and other ingredients. These materials are packed tightly into kashigata molds and dried to create beautiful designs and shapes. Many of these sweets can be found in wagashi shops and grocery stores still today.

This two-panel carved wooden kashigata wagashi cake mold is in the shape of a hagoita, a popular traditional paddle. It has carved kanji (shukujoto 祝上棟) that congratulates someone for the completion of the building of the framework of a structure like a house or a business. At the bottom are rolling ocean waves for decoration. This mold can be used to make sweets or as an eye-catching decorative item.
