Vtg. Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Orin Bell Fabric Pillow

This is a vintage Japanese orin bell pillow or cushion for Buddhist altars. It is mostly bright white and orange with chrysanthemum designs in gold. The bottom side is red. This cushion has a unique shape in that the sides have a 3D, almost origami-like look that resembles a chrysanthemum. The piece is finished with a yellow tassels on each side.

Singing bowls are sounded during ritual prayer. The sound of an Orin bell can reach the Buddha in the Pure Land. Sound is also used to ward off people’s evil spirits and convey prayers to the Buddha, ancestors, and the deceased. The pillows help stabilize the bowl, balance the sound, and act as a personal design choice for the user.
