Chinese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Chinese hanging scroll (called kakejiku or makimono in Japanese) features a landscape with mountains, a river, and houses. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, literally mountains and water. It is painted with black ink. This piece has text on the top right, and it is signed with a name and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
