Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Lacquer Offering Table　

This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar offering table (Maejoku). It is coated in a unique lacquer copper orange and black pattern called wakasa nuri. The rest is lacquered black and gold. On the front side has carved peonies painted gold. All sides but the back as well as the wings on the top panel have brass metal embellishments that feature etched chrysanthemums. It contains a removable, winged top panel and a narrow middle panel.

In the case of memorial services, a piece of cloth called Uchishiki is inserted between the base and top piece. There are two types of offering tables Maejoku and Uwajoku. Maejoku is placed in front of the Shumidan. It is used for 3 Gusoku (candle stand, flower vase, and incense burner). Uwajoku is placed in front of Amidanyorai. It is used for a flower vase, a rice cup, and a kasha incense burner.

• Okay condition considering age. Wakasa lacquer is flaking on top surface (very delicate). Some scratches and discolorations on black and gold sections. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos.
