Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Lacquer Offering Table　

This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar offering table (Maejoku). It is coated in a glossy black lacquer with gold-painted accents. There are brass embellishments on the edges as well as carved wooden bird scenes in the side-center panels. It contains a matching, removable top panel with gold on the side.

In the case of memorial services, a piece of cloth called Uchishiki is inserted between the base and top piece. There are two types of offering tables Maejoku and Uwajoku. Maejoku is placed in front of the Shumidan. It is used for 3 Gusoku (candle stand, flower vase, and incense burner). Uwajoku is placed in front of Amidanyorai. It is used for a flower vase, a rice cup, and a kasha incense burner.
