Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Box

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features Daruma or Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk. Daruma is standing and holding a long stick with a hyotan gourd and other objects. This piece is titled and signed with a name and red seals. It is stored in a paper box.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
