Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk and other woven fabric, the backside is plain white while the main part is a bright orange with embroidered gold and orange chrysanthemums (kiku). There is also a white, green, and gold floral grid pattern.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
