Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk, the top band and backside have a white floral and dragon design. The main part has deep blue background with striking gold embroidered chrysanthemums (kiku) and paulownia flowers (kiri), two very prominent symbols of longevity and good luck respectively.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism as the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year’s Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
