Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board

This vintage hand-painted shikishi art board of vibrant orange cosmos flowers is a stunning display piece that can find a place in any home or office decor. In Japan, cosmos are known to symbolize purity and humility. Since they bloom in autumn, the Japanese have lovingly called them akizakura, or “autumn cherry blossoms”.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
