Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll  

Hand-crafted and in a medium brown wood color, this slender wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll, or kakejiku. The lid fits loose on the top. The inside features one fixed wooden bracket used for securing a scroll in place. 

Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes, tea houses and also Japanese traditional inns called ryokan, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it’s popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
