Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) is a Mandala featuring the 88 Buddhist icons of Shikoku 88 Sacred Places pilgrimage with a picture of Kukai (or Kobo Daishi) at the center. Big Kanji in the center says Namudaishi Henjyokongo which means take refuge in Kobo Daishi. It is stored in a wooden box that says Mandala featuring the 88 Buddhist icons of Shikoku Sacred Places pilgrimage in Kanji.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
